Roatan, Honduras - Anthony's Key Resort

+ $250 REEF Program Fee per diver will be added to each package to cover the cost of the group leader, seminar and survey materials, and data management.

Trip Purpose – During the 2010 field survey trip to Roatan, REEF surveyed sites outside of the protected Roatan Marine Park. The number of fish and species counted was surprisingly low. One survey was conducted at a dive site within the protected marine reserve and dramatic differences were noted. Paul Humann said that he saw more large groupers and snappers than he has ever seen in the Caribbean since the 1960s and early 70s! Officials at the Roatan Marine Park have asked REEF to return in 2011 to survey only in the protected areas of the Marine Park to allow for comparisons to be made showing the efficacy of the reserve. Additionally, lionfish densities in Roatan are on the rise and REEF has been given permission from the Marine Park to aid in lionfish control. Trip participants will have the opportunity to assist with lionfish captures and data collection.

There will be detailed evening lectures on fish i.d., a lecture on the lionfish invasion covering recent research, and a guest lecturer, Karl Stanley, from the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration (RIDE) will talk about interesting deepwater fish species he encounters diving in his submersible.

Dominica - Invasive Lionfish Research Study with Dive Dominica and Castle Comfort Lodge

Led by Lad Akins, REEF Director of Special Projects, and Peter Hughes
22 divers maximum

Join REEF’s second Invasive Lionfish excursion to Dominica, known as the “Nature Island”, featuring a picturesque landscape of tropical rainforests, rivers, and waterfalls as well as boiling pools and geysers. Dominica’s volcanic activity and unique geothermal properties mean that the island has many one-of-a-kind locations, such as Champagne Reef, a warm, shallow dive site that gets its name from the many bubbles emerging from the ocean floor. Dominica, specifically Scott’s Head Marine Reserve on the southern end of the island, has been proactive in promoting lionfish awareness and education, and now more removal efforts and research are needed to determine the impacts of the invasion and success of control. In addition to conducting fish surveys, trip participants will have the opportunity to be trained in lionfish collection, handling, and dissections.

Cost per Person: $1,234 for double occupancy in a standard room; $1,460 for single occupancy in a standard room

What is included: Your package includes 7 nights of accommodation at Castle Comfort Lodge, 5 days of 2-tank boat dives with Dive Dominica, 1 night dive, unlimited shore diving off Dive Dominica’s dock, full breakfast each morning, round-trip airport transfers, service charges and government taxes (subject to change), use of sea kayaks, welcome cocktail upon arrival, tanks, weights and weight belts.

Additional fees: A REEF Program Fee of $300 per diver will be added to each package to cover the cost of the group leaders, seminar, and survey materials. Paid on premises: $20 per person marine reserve fee.

Airport/hotel transfer information: Participants will fly into Melville Hall (DOM) airport. From there, participants will be transported to Castle Comfort Lodge, a one-hour drive from the airport.

Barbados - Dive Barbados Blue & Coconut Court Beach Hotel

Led by Lad Akins, REEF Director of Special Projects
15 divers maximum

Barbados, the most easterly island in the Caribbean, is a new Field Survey Trip destination for REEF surveyors and offers the perfect escape from cold winter climates. With less than 250 total fish surveys conducted in the waters surrounding the island, this trip is an excellent opportunity for surveyors of all levels to collect valuable information for REEF’s online fish sightings database. Beginning and advanced surveyors alike have the opportunity to expand and reinforce their fish identification knowledge while exploring the many reefs and wrecks throughout Carlisle Bay Marine Park. This protected area attracts an abundance of marine life including octopuses, seahorses, and many tropical fish species; in fact, Barbados has the Tropical Western Atlantic region’s highest sighting frequency of the elusive Flameback Angelfish.

Cost per person: $1,303 for double occupancy in a standard room, $1,969 for single occupancy
