Trip Purpose – During the 2010 field survey trip to Roatan, REEF surveyed sites outside of the protected Roatan Marine Park. The number of fish and species counted was surprisingly low. One survey was conducted at a dive site within the protected marine reserve and dramatic differences were noted. Paul Humann said that he saw more large groupers and snappers than he has ever seen in the Caribbean since the 1960s and early 70s! Officials at the Roatan Marine Park have asked REEF to return in 2011 to survey only in the protected areas of the Marine Park to allow for comparisons to be made showing the efficacy of the reserve. Additionally, lionfish densities in Roatan are on the rise and REEF has been given permission from the Marine Park to aid in lionfish control. Trip participants will have the opportunity to assist with lionfish captures and data collection.
There will be detailed evening lectures on fish i.d., a lecture on the lionfish invasion covering recent research, and a guest lecturer, Karl Stanley, from the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration (RIDE) will talk about interesting deepwater fish species he encounters diving in his submersible.
