Mustache and beard on parrotfish

There is grass or algae growing on the beak of this midnight parrotfish.  I've never seen that before.  My assumption is it is just a sign of old age.  It was a remarkably large midnight parrotfish.  Is this growth common?  Is it a sign of age?

The photo was taken today (January 5, 2009) on Molasses Reef, Key Largo, Florida, at 29 feet.

Thank You,

Marty

algae on teeth

I've seen it on striped parrotfish in Bonaire. I haven't figured out how to upload images on this site yet, but it had the algea growing/stuck on the sides of its mouth. Not sure if it grew there or was freshly scraped off.

red algae explosion in Curacao

i have seen "fields" of red algae on areas that were affected by hurricane Omar 2 years ago. it is very thick in some sites and seems to be killing - among other - our beautiful gorgonians.

I also wonder about parrot fish, since they eat algae.

is it toxic?
is there a way to get rid of it?
what eats it?
