Key Largo, Florida. The Reef Environmental Education Foundation’s home study DVD, Reef Fish Identification Florida Caribbean Bahamas, A Beginning Course has been awarded a Bronze Award in the 2008 Telly Awards competition in the Non-Broadcast Education category.
Aimed at beginning fishwatchers, the course teaches the basics of fishwatching, including 50 common species found in the tropical Western Atlantic. Packaged with the DVD are a waterproof fish identification booklet, underwater survey slate, REEF survey materials and REEF membership. Designed primarily as a self-study tool, the DVD is also used by instructors in conjunction with marine life identification dive specialty courses and through REEF’s Field Station Program. The course is available online at www.REEF.org and at dive retailers and resorts.
The one-hour DVD is a joint production between New World Publications and ReefNet. All proceeds from sales of the product help support the REEF Volunteer Survey Project, REEF’s flagship citizen science program that enlists volunteer divers and snorkelers to conduct marine life surveys that help scientists make informed resource management decisions.
