REEF surveys as part of college field trips

Hi everyone! I am an intern at Blackbeard's Cruises in Freeport, Bahamas this summer http://www.blackbeard-cruises.com/. For my intern project, I am looking at how to bring college courses out on the water to do scientific research using liveaboard dive boats as their base of operations. One way to do this, I think, is to involve students in community service based dive activities, such as REEF surveys, lionfish removal studies, diadema relocation projects, and comparisons between marine protected areas and unprotected reefs. If anyone has done a project like a REEF survey with a college program, either for a class or a dive club trip, I would love to hear about it! I hope that college students will be able to take away valuable lessons from projects like this, and I would love to see the SCUBA industry appealing to a younger market for a good, community based caused. Thanks everyone!
