Last year was full of amazing adventures! The following are some of REEF’s major accomplishments in 2009:
Volunteers conducted 4,728 marine life surveys, representing over 5,000 underwater hours; We held the 18th Annual Great Annual Fish Count, in which hundreds of divers conducted surveys during July; We conducted dozens of Invasive Lionfish workshops in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean to spread the word about the threat that Lionfish pose for coral reefs of the region; The Pacific Northwest Advanced Assessment Team (AAT) conducted the 7th year of monitoring at sites in the Olympic Coast and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries; We greatly expanded our ground-breaking research on spawning aggregations of endangered Nassau grouper as part of the Grouper Moon Project; Volunteers and researchers conducted detailed Lionfish surveys in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as part of a NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program funded project to better understand the impact of this invasive species; Volunteers netted 1,408 Lionfish in one day at the first Bahamas Lionfish Derby; REEF continued a successful training program in the Pacific Northwest and conducted several training workshops in Southern California; We provided REEF data for use in a scientific study, conducted by Dr. Chris Stallings of Florida State University, to evaluate the status of big fish and fisheries in the Caribbean; We updated our Online Data Entry interface to include all REEF survey regions, including the US Northeast and the Tropical Eastern Pacific; and We launched the REEF official Facebook page, where you can join as a fan and share with your friends.
