Trying to find out what fish this is. It was found at Grave's Light in Boston Harbor, rocky bottom at about

Looks like either a Sea Robin or Thorny Sculpin but I wanted to confirm before I submitted a REEF survey. Apologize for the poor quality of the picture

Thanks in advance,
-Mike

I don't think it's any of the Sea Robins

I think this is a Sea Raven (Hemitripterus americanus)
Check it out at this site:

Please note that there are a couple of Sculpin species that can be mistaken for this fish so look at those closely (it's at the bottom of the page)

I took the liberty of enhancing your photos a bit to see more detail. I believe I can make out some cirri along the bottom jaw or face and the very frilly and spiked dorsal fin looks very Sea Raven to me.

I have no idea how to add images to this comment, so that i can put the enhanced ones. I'll try to figure that out. If I can't and you would like to see them either give me permission to post them as a new post or give me an e-mail where I can send them to you.

Let's see if this works?!!
