Where do the REEF Ocean Explorers Single-Day Summer Camps take place?
Camp is based at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, 102601 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo, FL. All field activities (snorkeling, kayaking, etc.) will depart from the State Park.
What to expect at camp:
A camp for the ocean-minded and adventurous! Join REEF Ocean Explorers Camp to make a splash this summer!
The camp hosted at John Pennekamp State Park is heavily based outdoors. The 'home base' is a shaded outdoor pavilion and a small indoor classroom. All swimming opportunities will require a snorkel vest or life jacket. Campers should be comfortable in the water.
Each day will include:
- Swimming or snorkeling sessions (optional)
- Walks through mangrove trails
- Outdoor games and adventures
- Marine science lessons, dissections, and conservation activities
Wednesday, June 22 will include:
- Snorkel trip by boat to the coral reef
Wednesday, August 3 will include:
- Kayak trip through mangrove trails in the bay
Who can sign up for camp? Does my child need to know how to swim?
REEF welcomes campers ages 7-13 years old for each session.
While swimming is not a requirement of the camp, it is a large component. Campers will get the best overall experience if they are able to participate in all camp activities. We prefer campers to be comfortable in deep (10-20+ feet) water without assistance from an adult. Regardless of swimming ability, a personal floatation device or snorkel vest will be provided to campers and worn during in-water boat snorkel and kayak tour.
How much does camp cost?
Camp tuition is $60 per session, $90 for kayak day, and $110 for boat snorkel day. If you register siblings or register for all 8 camp sessions, we offer discounts!
What does my camper need to bring? Do they need to bring lunch?
The camp packing list is minimal. Campers should bring a swimsuit and a set of dry clothes, a towel, and sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses etc.). REEF will supply snorkel gear and activity materials. Parents need to pack a sack lunch and water bottle for their camper each day. Due to limitations at the State Park, we are not able to provide a box lunch. A more detailed packing list will be sent to registered campers.
Who is the camp staff?
A mix of full-time REEF employees and REEF interns. All camp staff must pass a background check. Full-time camp staff are CPR and First Aid certified. Camp staff has educational backgrounds in marine science, biology, conservation, and education.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
REEF Ocean Explorers Camp is limited to 15 campers per camp session. The small number allows for a more personal experience, a safe environment, and an attentive staff. At least 3 counselors will always be present, we aim for a 5:1 ratio throughout camp.
