The REEF Volunteer Fish Survey Project represents the largest marine life database in the world! You can bring this data into your classroom or programs.
Marine Science II Honors students at Coral Shores High School in Islamorada, Florida, recently assessed trends and patterns in the ecosystem health by comparing two sites in the Florida Keys.
To prepare students for their field adventure, marine science and honors biology teacher Edward Bauer invited our Ocean Explorers Education team to teach students about fish ID and survey methods. Afterwards, they headed out on the water to conduct REEF fish surveys!
To conclude their field research, the students created poster titled, Assessing the Diversity and Abundance of Fish Species at Davey Crocker Reef and Davis Reef in Islamorada, Florida. By using the REEF database and their surveys to compare the two sites, the students found that Davis Reef has a higher fish abundance and biodiversity than Davey Crocker Reef.

The REEF Ocean Explorers Education team has grown! We recently welcomed Mead Krówka to the team as Education Coordinator. Read on to learn more about our education staff.
Mead Krówka, Education Coordinator - Mead joined the REEF team this past February. He will provide support for Ocean Explorers Programs at the REEF Campus in Key Largo, assist with program and curriculum development, coordinate community outreach efforts, and oversee the REEF Marine Conservation Internship.
Madalyn “Moose” Mussey, Education Manager: Ocean Explorers Programs - Moose manages all Ocean Explorers Education Program based at the REEF Campus in Key Largo, FL. She oversees scheduling, and teaches programs for classes, groups, and individuals who travel to the Florida Keys from all over the country. Moose was a REEF Marine Conservation Intern in the spring of 2019, and joined the staff in November 2019.
Hilary Penner, Education Manager: Program Development - Hilary develops partnerships with educators and the community, creates new youth learning opportunities, and supports formal and informal educators who are interested in incorporating REEF programs into their classrooms and activities. She oversees the REEF Educator Advisory Panel and Educator in the Field Fellowship. Hilary had been involved with REEF as a volunteer for more than two decades prior to joining the REEF team in 2021.
