The Great Annual Fish Count (GAFC) is REEF’s annual citizen science event that brings divers and snorkelers together to learn about marine life and collect fish survey data. Throughout the month of July, dive shops and organizations around the world participate by hosting their own events, in collaboration with REEF, that aim to introduce their communities to fish identification and REEF surveys through the Volunteer Fish Survey Project. These events typically include free fish ID classes and/or group survey dives.

• Can I only do fish surveys in July?
  • No! REEF needs data all year round. The Great Annual Fish Count is meant to be a time to promote, amplify, and encourage folks to get involved.
• I have no experience with surveying or fish ID. Can I still participate?
  • Of course! This is the perfect time to get started.
