Invertebrate Seminar offered by Dr Steve Lonhart of NOAA
Learn how to identify some of the SoCal fish, invertebrates and algae you see on your dives.
We'll be using common names, not scientific names, and focus on how to ID each critter. Classes help divers learn how to become citizen scientists and help monitor California marine life on their recreational dives. Data gathered goes into an online database to help students, researchers, scientists, etc. (see www.reef.org)

The event includes 2 nights in Friday Harbor, and introduction REEF Fish ID class and 2 days of 2 tank boat diving to hone your skills.

REEF survey dive trip including 2 dives. A survey will be conducted on each dive. Novice to expert levels welcome. Instruction will be provided. This is a great chance to practice your fish ID skills with other fellow fish watchers.
This is a free course for those enthusiastic about developing basic reef fish ID skills and reef fish ecology. Novice and expert fish watchers are welcome. Opportunities to dive and earn a level 2 reef surveyor will be scheduled for the following weekend. Please fell free to call with any questions.

Join us for a one hour introductory reef fish ID training class which will be followed by an OPTIONAL snorkel survey immediately afterwards for those who would like to test what they’ve learned. The class will begin at 9:30 am and the survey will begin at 11:00 am. The survey will last approximately 30-40 minutes and involve identifying, counting and recording reef fish observed in the Waikiki MLCD. After the snorkel, we’ll gather briefly on the beach to identify any unknown fish and share sightings of cool marine critters.

The class will begin at 8 am and the survey will begin around 9:30 am. The survey will last approximately 30-40 minutes and involve identifying, counting and recording reef fish observed in the Waikiki MLCD. Those wishing to participate in the survey should be strong swimmers, competent snorkelers, and have their own mask, snorkel and fins.
Free classes for divers in the Pacific NW. Fish class is Friday night, Invertebrate class is Saturday morning.
