The Florida Oceanographic Society (FOS) will sponsor for the public a free fish identification training class on Tuesday June 26 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. FOS is located at 890 NE Ocean Boulevard Stuart, Florida 34996. The fish identification training will focus on the Top 30 fish species commonly found at Bathtub Beach in Martin County. Participants are encouraged to conduct a REEF fish snorkel survey at Bathtub Beach anytime during the month of July. Seating is limited and reservations are required.

Ned DeLoach will be presenting one of his popular fish behavior talks as part of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) free Fishinar series. Ned’s talk, Speed Dating Fishy Style: How Fish Spawn and When You’re Likely to Catch Them in the Act, will be live online on May 9th at 8pm EDT.

The presentation, which will highlight many of Ned’s unique fish behavior photographs, will be followed by a Q&A session.

This is a snorkel event only for the Great Annual Fish Count. It is a shore entrance with a maximum depth of 12 feet.

This is both a snorkel and scuba survey, but participants will need their own boat to get to the survey sites. Average depths will range from 5 to 35 feet.

Nine REEF members joined REEF Director of Science, Dr. Christy Pattengill-Semmens, for a Field Survey week in Nevis last week, kicking off the 2012 REEF Trip season with a bang. The group stayed at Oualie Beach Resort on Nevis and dove with the on-site dive operator, Scuba Safaris. Over 120 surveys were conducted, which is a great addition to the REEF database for this region (prior to this trip, there were only 7 surveys from Nevis). Each afternoon, the group would gather for a few hours to discuss the day's sightings, review images and video, and enter survey data.
