All data submitted to REEF’s Volunteer Fish Survey Project (VFSP) are housed in a publicly-assessible database that can be queried through a variety of reports on the REEF website. REEF recently partnered with Dr. Ross Robertson at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to link the online REEF Species Distribution Reports to species accounts on STRI’s online information systems, “Shorefishes of the Greater Caribbean” and “Shorefishes of the Tropical Eastern Pacific”.

What have the Summer 2020 Marine Conservation Interns been up to?

Run, walk, hike, or bike to support ocean conservation

KEY LARGO, FLA. – All are invited to register for REEF’s Fish Out of Water Virtual 5K, to be held from Sept. 28 – Oct. 4. Participants may choose their preferred exercise (run, walk, bike, hike, etc.) to support ocean conservation. Each individual may complete the 5K (3.1 miles) at their own pace; in one day or over the course of the week.

Join us for our first ever Fish Out of Water Virtual 5K Race! The Fish Out of Water Virtual 5K is a chance to get out and get active in your local community while making your miles count. From September 28 - October 4, we're encouraging the REEF community and ocean enthusiasts everywhere to get moving in the name of conservation. You can choose to run, walk, hike, or bike, completing the 5K (3.1 miles) distance in one day or broken into smaller sections over the week.

Ocellated Frogfish

Please join REEF for another fun FISHY HOUR with a game of Fishardy - a fish Jeopardy-style game. This version will be a bonus round for fish found in our Tropical Western Atlantic region!

As the Florida Keys began to open up, the summer Marine Conservation Interns moved in and began at REEF! Joining Lead Intern Maddi Piascik for the summer are Emily Wheat, Tasha McCluhan, and Stephanie Letourneau. These interns had a great orientation week meeting led by Intern Coordinator, David Ehlert. They met all the staff, learned about REEF programs and projects, created lionfish jewelry, dissected a lionfish, and of course, went on their first fish survey! The interns are excited to get involved this summer.

Calling all blenny lovers! We need your help tracking the range expansion of the Chameleon Blenny (also known as Warthead Blenny) in the Tropical Western Atlantic.

Fishinars

Fishinars are free webinars that will teach you the finer points of fish ID. These educational sessions are open to anyone wanting to learn more about marine life. They are great for new REEF surveyors or anyone who wants to review. We record all Fishinars and make them available online for viewing at any time. With more than 190 archived sessions, you can find one for every ocean region and every level of experience.

REEF members are the heart of our grassroots marine conservation programs. A diverse community of divers, snorkelers, and ocean enthusiasts support our mission to conserve marine environments worldwide.
