What are the Ocean Explorers Case Studies?

Created for cross-curricular access for high school students, the Ocean Explorers Case Studies can be used as a mini-unit or a stand-alone lesson for Biology, Environmental Science, Speech, and Engineering courses. The Invasive Lionfish Case Study analyzes habitat and adaptations of the lionfish and its effects on biodiversity and biomass. Students will have the option to engineer a lionfish trap or propose a genetic modification to curb populations. The Grouper Moon Case Study incorporates community cooperation and sustainable fishing as students form a panel to discuss different stakeholders of an important economic and natural resource- the Nassau grouper.

What is included in the Ocean Explorers Case Study program?

Each program lesson will include the following:

  • Pre-recorded introduction video to prepare students for the activity
  • Summary sheet to provide an overview of information for students
  • Student worksheet(s)
  • Background information and step-by-step instructions for teacher or educator
  • Live session with REEF (optional)

Once you have requested a REEF team member will contact you to ensure you have received all of your materials and the resources are clear and comprehensive. If needed, a meeting may be scheduled to discuss questions, concerns, or any general inquiries about the facilitation of a case study.

How do the Ocean Explorers Case Studies work?

After submitting an interest form for the case studies, educators will be sent a link to an electronic packet containing the teacher information and instructions, student information and worksheets, and a link to the pre-recorded introduction video. After signing up to receive the materials, the contact person will be asked if they would like to schedule a live Zoom session with a REEF team member to speak with their class. If scheduling a live session, the educator must coordinate a time and day 1-2 weeks before the preferred date.

Students will need anywhere from 1 to 3 class periods to complete a case study. Each case study will begin with a pre-recorded introduction video meant to explain to the students what they will be doing and why (2-3 minutes). Teachers or educators will give the students their background information and worksheets to complete their case study as individuals, pairs, small groups, or as an entire class. After completing the case study, students will regroup as a class to discuss their findings.

What is required of the classroom teacher or educator to lead the program?

Each Ocean Explorers Case Study follows high school level standards and subjects, allowing for easy participation on the teacher's end. Your students will be guided through the case study with pre-recorded videos, written background information, and worksheets.

For the high school case studies, there will be minimal to no preparation for the teacher to facilitate the engaging activities.

What ages can participate in the Ocean Explorers Case Studies?

The Ocean Explorers Case Studies are intended for high school age levels and above. If you're interested in programs for other age groups, visit our Educator Resources webpage to find more information on our education programs.

Is there a fee to participate in the program or use the materials?

Thanks to the generosity of REEF members and donors, at this time, groups can participate in the program at no cost. Expenses associated with the program are supported through REEF’s Oceans for All Fund. The Ocean for All Fund is a pooled scholarship fund supported by businesses, foundations, and individuals committed to investing in a more equitable future for marine conservation. This fund promotes inclusive opportunities for people to connect with, enjoy, and learn about the underwater world. REEF uses the fund in partnership with established organizations. It directly provides both in-person and online programs, ensuring that cultivating connections with the ocean is not limited by zip code. The Oceans for All Fund reduces barriers that restrict participation in REEF’s programs. To learn more about the Oceans for All Fund, visit our webpage.

Can any group participate or only school classroom groups?

Though the Ocean Explorers Case Studies program is designed to fit into school classrooms, groups of any kind may participate. We recommend groups are comprised of participants of similar ages.

Is there a minimum number of participants required in a group?

Nope! Each activity within the program can be completed individually within the group, in pairs or small groups, or as an entire group.
