Florida Climate Week- From REEF to Resilience

Join REEF for a full day exploring the health and resilience of Florida’s coastal ecosystems and the role each of us can play in understanding and protecting them.

The day begins with a Volunteer Fish Survey Project classroom session, where participants will learn how fish populations and reef communities can serve as indicators of ecosystem health and why long-term monitoring is important. Participants can then put their skills into practice during a guided REEF Fish Survey Project dive or snorkel, collecting observations that contribute to REEF’s citizen science database.

Ocean After Hours- Lionfish Jewelry Workshop

A fish as beautiful as it is destructive; invasive lionfish have had dramatic impacts on marine ecosystems due to their high reproductive rate and voracious appetites. These visually stunning fish have characteristic red and white stripes and long, fanlike spines and fins. 

Science Saturdays- Endangered Species: Grouper Moon

Join us for a free community science lesson and activity in our Science Discovery Classroom! Dive into REEF’s ongoing collaboration with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment and scientists from UC San Diego and Oregon State to study and protect the Nassau Grouper, a keystone Caribbean species. Better understand how stakeholders play a role in species protection.

Ocean After Hours- Turtle Talk with Phil Allman

Join us for Ocean After Hours: Turtle Talk with Professor Phil Allman of Goshen College as he shares his research tracking sea turtles in the Florida Keys.

Learn how researchers can identify individual turtles by the unique patterns on their faces, no tags required, and discover what these sightings can tell us about turtle movements, habitat use, and life in the Keys. Come hear about the turtles Allman and his students are documenting and how divers, snorkelers, and the community can help contribute to the research.

Bonaire Fish ID Class

Join us for a FREE marine life education class at the Trans World Radio (TWR) Bonaire Headquarters on Thursday, Aug 27 at 7:00 pm AST

We’ll be continuing our series on odd‑shaped swimmers, and this session will focus on triggerfish and filefish. Dana and I will be co‑teaching, and we’re really looking forward to seeing as many people as possible join us for the presentation.

Key West Aquarium Lionfish Saturday

Join us at the Key West Aquarium to learn about one of the Florida Keys' most impactful marine invaders, the red lionfish. Stop by our outreach table anytime from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to explore lionfish biology, their impacts on native reef ecosystems, and how divers and community members are helping manage this invasive species through citizen science and conservation.

Don't miss our live lionfish dissection demonstrations from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, where you'll get an up-close look at lionfish anatomy and learn what makes this species such a successful invader.
