Join Reef Watch Waikiki to learn how to identify fish using the REEF survey method. The class includes instruction on how to complete a REEF survey followed by basic coral reef ecology, fish biology, identification tips, and specific information about different fish families. You do not need to bring anything to the class besides yourself. Lastly, to reach the 7th floor conference room, park on the 6th floor in a visitor spot and use the elevators on the 6th floor.
After completing a REEF Fish ID Class, you can join us for a REEF snorkel survey. The survey will last approximately 30-40 minutes and involve identifying, counting and recording reef fish observed in the Waikiki MLCD. Those wishing to participate in the survey should be strong swimmers, competent snorkelers, and have their own mask, snorkel and fins. Besides snorkel gear, please bring your own dive slate, survey paper, towel, sunscreen, water, rashguard or wetsuit. After the snorkel, we’ll gather briefly on the beach to identify any unknown fish and share sightings of cool marine critters.

The day will begin with a FREE fish and invertebrate identification class presented by SeaDoc Society's Chief Scientist, Joe Gaydos.
Saturday morning July 10 Reef Advanced Assessment Team members Carol and Gregg Cline will be teaching the Reef Pacific Northwest Fish ID class . After lunch two survey dives will be complete at Sund Rock. Sunday morning, July 11, Carol and Gregg will conduct the Pacific Northwest Invertebrate ID class. Two survey dives will be conducted immediately after the class.
The class will begin at 6 pm and last till around 8pm. The class includes instruction on how to complete the REEF survey method followed by basic coral reef ecology, fish biology, identification tips, and specific information about different fish families. The REEF survey consists of recording the different species of fish and number of each fish with basic snorkel gear.
