Two color phases, the one pictured is dark brown to red with a white stripe on second half of body. The other is dark brown with darker brown stripes.
Dark brown with red spots on face. Fringe of cirri behind each eye and on back of head.
Terminal is variable in color, but generally blue/green with orange wash on sides. Initial phase is dark brown with red around head, double row of white spots, large dark spot on tail.

Males are deep blue-green with vertical yellow bar above pectoral fin. Females have white head, gradually becoming darker towards tail, upper part of snout orange.
Dark brown to olive body covered in bright blue spots. Often have body bars on rear half of body. Introduced to Hawaii in 1956.
Dark body with large white area on side. Endemic to Hawaii.
